The speaker this month is Amelia Harris with UVA Wise, who has agreed to speak to our group about the requirements to hire international workers. This topic is associated with the Global Mindset area of the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK).

It doesn’t matter how effective an HR department is. If you can’t communicate initiatives, intents, needs, wants, objectives, and successes, your department might not get the respect it deserves. Technical expertise only goes as far as effective communication will take it.

This specific session will focus on the SHRM INTERPERSONAL competency cluster and target the key behaviors of Relationship Management and Communication.

What is the role of HR in coaching supervisors?  This is the question our speaker will answer at today's meeting.  Valerie Lee, Director of Human Resources at Mountain Empire Community College, has 30 years in human resource and payroll administration/management in various industry and governmental operations.  She will address ways that HR can coach supervisors to help them develop as leaders, manage stress, improve their ability to manage conflict, and achieve company goals.

HR professionals need many skills, but which ones are most critical for HR professionals?  Join us for our September meeting and hear from Stephanie Perry, Director of Human Resources at UVA Wise about the skills HR professionals need in order to thrive.
