Civility in the workplace refers to behaviors that respect the dignity and rights of others, promoting a positive and harmonious work environment. It involves maintaining professionalism, courtesy, and respect in communication and interactions. Incivility, on the other hand, includes rude or disrespectful behavior, which can lead to a toxic work culture, lower morale, decreased productivity, and higher employee turnover.
A workplace that fosters civility encourages open communication, trust, and collaboration. It helps to reduce stress, improve job satisfaction, and build a sense of community among employees. A civil work environment is critical for both individual and organizational success. By the end of the presentation, attendees should understand how to foster a respectful and inclusive work environment, recognize the value of civility, and implement effective strategies to ensure a positive workplace culture.

- Define Civility in the Workplace - Explain what civility entails and highlight examples of civil and uncivil behaviors in the workplace.
- Discuss the Importance of Civility - Explore how a culture of respect impacts employee well-being, productivity, engagement, and retention.

Monique Akanbi, SHRM-CP, is the Membership Initiatives Director with SHRM and co-host of SHRM’s Honest HR Podcast.
